Mastery in chiaroscuro........ Her understanding of light and shade is profound....Whether it is blues, greens, deep reds, purples, the treatment is romantic, .... leaves a soft blush 'reminiscence behind' .

Colors of strength - It is the intense strength of Jain's use of colors that would instantly strike the visitor. She employs color with joy and vivacity. Each daub, each stroke carries in it a luminosity that is seen only in the best art. It does seem that the artist does not steer the brush at all. It moves on it's own...
These works have sharp, hard strokes of the brush that give them a slightly austere character. Such traits were seen in the well known artists of Rebellion who wished to get away from the comfortable laxity of custom....

Meaningful Melange - For a change, we now have at the Jehangir gallery the feel of emotions being recollected in pensive tranquility, of thoughts which seem to be racing in mind, of the wildering images, which get created on the canvas, of the brain cells of the artist ticking all the time like the wall clock in your drawing room. The end result is a multitude of landscapes of a different milieu, where apart from the traditional naturescapes we also witness a number of emotion scooped out of the inner recesses of the mind....
The artist has a highly creative mind....It is her innovative bent of mind which creates a lasting impact on the mind of the viewers.

One has only to see her drawing to conclude that she is an artist with talent and experience. She appears to have evolved a style of her own. She has a special way of composing landscapes.

Imagination and fancy are two principal ingredients we see here. Urmil Jain is romantic in her approach to the environment which is a landscape of the mystique of expressionism. She has cultivated a brilliant pallate, and the Gauguin-colours are used uninhibitedly......Her best work, which is also the best work in this exhibition is a quiet but emotive portrayal of a forest scene entitled "Vagabonds". This work portrays both the mystery of the forest and the mystery of childhood. It is fraught with a sense of human company and loneliness.

Urmil Jain has perceptivity in some measure for the elements of composition. She is fond of bright colours but then she knows how to make them joyous in quality and she can create good patterns out of them. She has imaginative sensibility as in.....
A glowing landscape such as "Dawn" by Urmil Jain, even though it derives a lot from Mr. Sailoz Mukherjee, succeeds in presenting aspects of the visual experience which can never become obsolete.

The Empty Bench.....Indian painter Urmil Jain draws inspiration from often over-looked everyday beauty. The balance of bright and dark in this painting gives it an almost mystical feel. “The Empty Bench” conjures up feelings of intrigue and romanticism. The painting could fall into several categories: impressionism, surrealism and even symbolism..

Fantastical landscapes.....Urmil Jain's wondrous, billowing landscapes and scenes flow across her canvases as if seeping out from some distant point on the horizon; Urmil's spectacular visions draw the eye into a dynamic cycle. The emotive force of each piece is immediately felt, after which subtle details and nuances of light and application emerge gradually. The fantastical landscapes and characters in her paintings evoke Urmil's passion for writing fiction and poetry, yet she's content to leave most of their narrative up to viewers' imagination....

Urmil's "narrative" paintings have many stories to tell. Stories that unfold in the light of day and by moonlight, as her pictures do. She knows how to thrust light upon the canvas and create the most exquisite beauty, peacefulness, romance and mystery. One sees the innocence of discovery in the magical nuances that she creates with pictorial acumen, lush color and sweeping brush strokes. These are fabulous stories to enjoy over and over again.
